Tian Xiang (天相)

Tian Xiang (天相) is the star of service and mediation — the capable second-in-command who makes the decision workable. Its image is the official seal: authority that is delegated rather than owned, and taken seriously for exactly that reason.

Character

Tian Xiang is fair-minded and unusually good at the middle position. It sees both sides genuinely rather than diplomatically, dislikes conflict without being afraid of it, and is frequently the person a group trusts to arbitrate. Loyalty is a real feature of this star, not a decorative one.

There is an aesthetic and ceremonial streak too. Tian Xiang cares about how things are done — form, appearance, the correct handling of an occasion — and reads as well-presented and socially competent. Classically it is tied to food, clothing and the visible marks of a settled life.

The weakness is dependence on context. A seal has no authority of its own; it certifies someone else's. Tian Xiang placed among strong stars becomes genuinely effective, and placed among weak or afflicted ones becomes an enabler — the tradition is quite direct that this star takes the moral colour of its company.

Brightness across the twelve branches

Exalted in 子 Zi, 丑 Chou, 寅 Yin, 午 Wu, 申 Shen; fallen in 卯 Mao, 酉 You.

Exalted in the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Horse and Monkey, fallen in the Rabbit and Rooster. Like 天府 it grades well across most of the wheel, consistent with a star whose function is to make things work rather than to impose anything of its own.

What it wants beside it

Tian Xiang is read almost entirely through what surrounds it, more than any star except 廉貞. Between 天梁 and 巨門 it sits in the classical 刑忌夾印 configuration, where the seal is squeezed between punishment and dispute — worth checking on any chart where this star is prominent.
