Tai Yang (太陽)

Tai Yang (太陽) is the giving star — warmth directed outward, at other people, more or less continuously. It is the clearest example in the system of a star defined by what it spends rather than what it holds.

Character

The temperament is generous in the plain sense: Tai Yang notices what is needed and provides it, often before being asked, and often past the point of reasonableness. It carries a strong instinct for fairness and takes public responsibility comfortably. People rely on it, and it rather likes being relied upon.

Because the sun's job is to shine on things other than itself, this is a star that struggles to be the beneficiary. Tai Yang charts frequently describe someone who organises everyone else's needs and has genuine difficulty naming their own — not from modesty but because the machinery genuinely points outward.

The cost is burnout, and it is the single most consistent theme in readings of this star. Classical texts also read Tai Yang as the father and the male principle, so it carries specific weight in the palaces of Parents and Career, and traditionally describes the family member everyone else leans on regardless of gender.

Brightness across the twelve branches

Exalted in 卯 Mao; fallen in 子 Zi, 酉 You, 亥 Hai.

The brightness pattern is unusually literal here — Tai Yang is strong through the daylight branches from the Tiger to the Horse, peaking exalted in the Rabbit, and falls away through the evening ones to reach fallen in the Rat, Rooster and Pig. It is the one star whose table you can read as a clock and be substantially right.

What it wants beside it

Read Tai Yang together with 太陰, its opposite number: many charts have both prominent, and the balance between them describes how the person divides giving outward from holding inward. With 巨門 nearby, the giving acquires an argumentative edge and the star wants to be right as well as useful.
