Tian Ji (天機) is the star of the moving mind — planning, analysis, and the restlessness that comes with both. Its name means heavenly mechanism, and the image is machinery: something always turning, never quite at rest.

Tian Ji thinks for a living whether or not it is paid to. It takes things apart to see the linkage, enjoys a problem more than a solution, and is unusually good at spotting the second-order consequence that everyone else missed. Advisers, analysts, planners and the friend everyone calls before making a decision are all Tian Ji territory.
It is also a star of movement. Tian Ji charts change jobs, houses, cities and minds more often than average, and the changes are rarely disasters — they are the mechanism doing what mechanisms do. The star has a genuine talent for landing on its feet somewhere adjacent.
The weakness is that thinking substitutes for doing. Tian Ji can model a decision so thoroughly that the moment to make it passes, and it is prone to a specific kind of anxiety: the mind running when there is nothing to run on. Classically it is a star that wants religion, philosophy or some other large frame to sit inside, because without one it spins.

The grading swings hard, exalted in the Rat and Horse and fallen in the Ox and Goat — the sharpest good-to-bad spread of any star in the set. In practice this is read as a star whose usefulness depends heavily on where it lands: well placed it is genuinely clever, poorly placed it is merely busy.

Tian Ji is rarely read alone; it is one of the 機月同梁 group and takes much of its colour from whichever of the other three it is triangulated with. Paired with 太陰 it turns reflective and private; with 天梁 it turns principled and a little preachy.
