Lian Zhen (廉貞)

Lian Zhen (廉貞) is the most double-edged star in the system — classically both the star of principle and the star of vice, depending entirely on how it is placed. Its name means incorruptible, and it is also called 囚, the prisoner.

Character

Lian Zhen runs hot underneath a controlled surface. It holds strong internal standards, cares intensely about things other people find abstract, and has a capacity for focus that shades into obsession. When it is aimed at something worthwhile it produces genuine excellence.

The star carries strong social and aesthetic intelligence — it reads a room quickly, understands power, and knows how to be charming when charm is the tool required. This is why it appears so often in charts of people who work with people: negotiation, politics, law, design, anything where judgement about others is the actual skill.

The other face is the reason for its reputation. The same intensity that produces standards produces fixation, and Lian Zhen is the star most associated in classical material with entanglement — legal, romantic, financial. The tradition treats it as the star that most needs a worthy object, because it will attach itself intensely to whatever is available.

Brightness across the twelve branches

Exalted in 寅 Yin, 申 Shen; fallen in 巳 Si, 亥 Hai.

Lian Zhen is exalted only in the Tiger and Monkey and falls in the Snake and Pig, spending most of the wheel at 平 or 利. This flat middle is characteristic: the star's outcome is determined less by its own grading than by what it is standing next to, which is exactly what the tradition says about it.

In Life it is the intense, principled, somewhat driven temperament above. In Career it does well in fields requiring judgement about people. In Spouse it is classically complicated — strong attachment, strong standards, little flexibility. In Health it points to blood and inflammatory conditions.

Company matters more for Lian Zhen than for any other star. With 天相 it steadies into competence and public service; with 貪狼 the appetite side dominates; with 七殺 or 破軍 the intensity finds an outlet that is productive or destructive depending on the rest of the chart.
