Tan Lang (貪狼)

Tan Lang (貪狼) is the star of desire in the widest sense — for experience, pleasure, skill, attention, and more of whatever is on offer. It is the most charismatic of the fourteen and the hardest to satisfy.

Character

Tan Lang is magnetic. It reads people quickly, adapts to company effortlessly, and is usually the most socially capable star in any chart it appears in. It picks up skills fast, gets bored faster, and accumulates an unusual range of half-mastered interests along the way.

The appetite is not only sensual, though the classical texts dwell on that. Tan Lang wants intensity of experience — which in one chart is nightlife and in another is scholarship, performance, or a religious vocation. The tradition notes the last of these specifically: the star has a real affinity with mysticism and the occult, which is the same hunger pointed somewhere less obvious.

The failure is dispersal. A life spent following whatever is most interesting today can end up with a great deal of experience and very little built. Tan Lang does its best work when something external imposes a structure it would not have chosen.

What it wants beside it

武貪 — Tan Lang with 武曲 — is the classical late-wealth combination, appetite finally meeting discipline. With 廉貞 the indulgent reading dominates. As one of 殺破狼 it is always triangulated with 七殺 and 破軍, so the chart always has an appetite for change somewhere in it.
