Ren (壬) is the ninth heavenly stem and the yang form of Water. If Ren is your Day Master, it is the stem above your day pillar, and every other character is read by its relationship to it.

Ren is water with volume and momentum — river, tide, ocean. It is the stem of movement and scale, drawn to whatever is large and unfinished, and constitutionally poor at staying in a container.
Ren thinks in breadth. Ideas arrive faster than they can be executed, connections between unrelated things are obvious to it, and it opens new ground easily. Water carries ships: a Ren chart frequently belongs to someone other people's plans travel on.
Water without a channel floods. The recurring Ren difficulty is dispersal — many directions begun, few concluded, energy spread across a surface too wide to be deep anywhere. Earth in the chart is what banks the river, and Ren tends to experience that constraint as hostile long before it recognises it as useful.
Water is produced by Metal and controls Fire; Earth controls it and Wood drains it. For Ren this means Metal is support and learning, Fire is wealth, Earth is authority and pressure, and Wood is output and expression. Earth is the relationship to watch: a Ren chart with no Earth at all has nothing shaping it, and one with too much is dammed rather than directed.

Classical BaZi grades a stem by the season it was born into — the 旺相休囚死 scale. Water peaks in winter, is supported in autumn, and is at its weakest in the Earth months when Earth dams it.

Water corresponds to Blue / black, the numbers 1, 6, and the direction North. These are traditional correspondences for the element itself. They are not a prescription — whether Water is helpful to you depends on your whole chart, not on your Day Master alone.

The day stem is 壬 sitting on 戌, an Earth branch — the river with a bank under it — in the month of 亥, early winter, when Water begins to rule. Water is strengthening seasonally while the branch beneath provides containment.
